Domestic violence – what can men do about it?

Things that every man can do about it

Think about and try to understand the attitudes which allow domestic violence to occur. Don't be afraid to speak out actively against sexism or homophobia, both of which play their part in allowing abusive relationships to develop.

If you suspect someone you know is abusing or being abused, don't remain a passive bystander, even if you feel that it’s none of your business. Doing nothing might encourage the abuser to think their behaviour is acceptable. Urge the person in question to seek help – whether as a victim or as a perpetrator.

If you are in an abusive relationship as the perpetrator

Have the courage to accept that you need to seek help, the intelligence to acknowledge that domestic violence is never acceptable, and the confidence to believe that there is a solution. It’s within your power to stop it.

If you are in an abusive relationship as the victim

Have the courage to seek help – even if you have the impression that it will make matters worse. As a man you are no different to the countless women who have spoken out about domestic violence and freed themselves from it.
